Description

he Italian-speaking southern portion of historic Tyrol stretches from the Brenner Pass to the shores of Lake Garda, encompassing some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Alps. Known as Welschtirol or 'Romance Tyrol' under Habsburg rule, the region blends Alpine and Mediterranean influences in its architecture, cuisine, and way of life. The Prince-Bishopric of Trent, seat of the famous Counter-Reformation council, left behind a legacy of Renaissance palaces and fortified churches. The valleys are dotted with castles—over three hundred survive—while the Dolomites to the east provide a stunning backdrop of rose-tinted peaks and vertical rock faces
